Close your eyes focus on your thoughts that elate your senses and deflate your hopes, thoughts of anger and frustration, thoughts of fears and phobias, thoughts of hopes and aspirations, thoughts of joys and sorrows, thoughts of worries and wants.
Focus more and you would realize that that all the thoughts churning in your mind are being watched by someone. Try talking to this someone and you would find that this someone is listening to everything, seeing everything but is not participating in any of the emotions that are rollicking and rocking your mind.
Tell him that you are happy but he just would not respond. Tell him you are sad but he would not react. Your mind experiences pain but he will not winch in pain. Your mind is in joy but he is not jumping in delight. Your mind and body is swayed by love, hate, compassion and kindness but he is impervious and impassive. He is just there witnessing the going on of your mind. A silent spectator, beyond the activities of your mind, beyond the dictates of the five senses of perception, beyond emotions that churn the mind.
You seek his advice but he will not give you any, you curse him but he will not be affected, you cannot shut him and you cannot hide from him. He is always there silently witnessing your life pass by.
In spite of the fact that he is beyond the field of activity, embedded in the silent depths of your mind, he is not inert. He is the witness and therefore conscious.
He is tranquillity, which means perfect balance with no activity. The wild gyrations of the active mind cannot disturb him and he is within us. He is detached in spite of being in the thick of an incessant riotous and chaotic activity. He is the core of our Being.
He is the SELF.
The core of perfection in the silent depths of mind co-exists with the turbulent and frenzied rind of imperfection on the surface of life.
Focus more on him and then you will begin to be envious of his placid, calm, composed, serenity and stillness. You would wish you too could be like him!
Contemplate, reflect and ponder for a while and it will dawn on you that he is there within you, always. You are never alone. Just reach out, focus on him and his placidity would start to expand and swell like a Tsunami to engulf the turbulent activity of your mind.
He is “I”, the real me. Calm, collected, peaceful “SELF”
You are never alone because Self is the bouncing board of all thoughts, emotions and feelings.
When you talk to him he listens.
He talks all the while to us but we do not listen because he speaks in silence. His language is silence.
During Meditation the mind experiences finer and finer levels of sound (Thoughts) until the finest vibrations are transcended and the mind experiences “silence”. In this silence Drashya (Images and sensations) become Drishta, the subject or SELF.
The Meditation is the process of interaction (communication) with the Drishta, who has all the answers to every problems of life.
